The Northern Chesapeake Chapter of MWC is an open group for women in widowhood of all ages, beliefs, backgrounds and experiences. The chapter is focused on being casual and conversational and a part of the national Modern Widows Club organization. You come and go as you please. We are honored for our community of supporters to provide this complimentary space. It takes a village. We realize taking that first step is huge and certainly daunting! We remember. Know that we are here to welcome you as you are today!
Nancy and Irmgarde met in 2004 when Nancy was coordinating a hosting program for Russian orphans in her community. Irmgarde and her husband, Mike, hosted a teenage girl who they ultimately adopted. Nancy and her late husband had also hosted through this same program (Kidsave) in 1999 and adopted a daughter following hosting. Nancy and Irmgarde have been friends ever since and have always talked about pursuing a “project” together. Both are excited to be able to provide women with an option beyond grief counseling. Together they look forward to encouraging widows in the region with companionship, friendship, support and empowerment.
Meet our Leaders
Chapter Leader: Nancy S.
Nancy has had a diverse career in higher education, business and the nonprofit sector. Currently she is the Director of a regional higher education center and remains very active in her community. Volunteering and giving back have been the cornerstone of her personal philosophy. Nancy was married for 15 years to Jerry and they have a daughter adopted from Russia in 1999. Following her husband’s unexpected death from a very rare and invasive form of testicular cancer in 2010 she knew at some point she wanted to do something to help widows learn to live again. She sought out different groups and ultimately found MWC and felt an immediate connection. She reached out to MWC and waited patiently for the opportunity to begin a chapter in Maryland. Nancy’s life has been enriched by her recent marriage to Michael and she is focused on a future that is built on the foundation of her past but crafted with a new vision for living that captures all the wonderful possibilities ahead.
Chapter Leader – Irmgarde B.
Irmgarde has enjoyed two careers: one as an actress and director in New York, Indianapolis, and Atlanta and a second career as a librarian and library manager with the Harford County Public Library in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Born of immigrant parents from Latvia, Irmgarde was raised in a bi-lingual environment/culture. She has a Master’s Degree in acting from New York University as well as a second Master’s degree in Information Science from Florida State University. She and her husband, Mike, moved from Atlanta to Havre de Grace in 1986; ten years later they adopted two sons from Latvia (ages 4 and 5), and eight years after that, they adopted a fifteen year old teen from St. Petersburg, Russia. The family worshipped and served at Restore Church and volunteered with various arts and sports organizations. Mike and Irmgarde celebrated 32 years of marriage on October 30, 2014 and on December 13, 2014, Mike died in his home of a massive heart attack (a man of good health, exercise, and healthy eating and no family history of heart disease). Irmgarde recently became a grandmother for the first time and remains focused on her faith, spirituality, writing, photography, and living positively.
