Our Mission Statement: We serve to empower widows to “lean into life,” build resilience and release their potential to make a positive difference in the world.

Modern Widows Club is designed to create a safe and private environment for widows to lean into life together through the journey.

We are the club no one wants to be in because you only get in by virtue of experiencing a great loss. Yet what I hope you find once you’re here is that you’re surrounded by a community of really amazing women that you can lean on and learn from. We’re widows helping widows to live– to go upward and onward. Sometimes we cry and sometimes we laugh. We talk about how to tackle challenges without our husbands’ help and cheer each other on. We often share food as we do this, because who doesn’t like to eat?

When a woman loses her husband she tends to feel very alone. Regardless of her age or circumstances, she can use other women in her life who understand the unique challenges she is now faced with. She needs women who will build her up and encourage her in this new life she walks. We are stronger together. No woman is an island. We need each other.

  Meet our Leaders

Chapter Leader – Kara F. (on Sabbatical)

Kara became a widow at age 46, with a four-year-old daughter. Her husband died in July of 2017 from Bile Duct Cancer. She has worked hard to rebuild her life and provide a good life for her daughter.
She stumbled across Modern Widows Club in 2018 during a Google search. She was searching for a club that would not only support widows in their grief, but also give them tools to thrive.  Her goal for the Sacramento chapter is to provide a safe space to share their stories while encouraging them to explore ways to thrive. And ultimately live their best life.

Chapter Leader – Laurie R.

Laurie became widowed at age 57 when her husband Larry passed away suddenly from a double aneurysm while they were traveling. Laurie and Larry had a loving, strong partnership in both a 33-year marriage and a thriving business. Every aspect of Laurie’s world was turned upside down in a matter of moments when she lost her best friend, soul mate, and business partner. Seeking a local widow’s support group to help her heal and grow, Laurie found Modern Widows Club via a Google search. She has worked hard since Larry’s passing to acknowledge and process her loss and grief while simultaneously striving to live a strong, meaningful, impactful life. She is honored to be able to give back through MWC and support other widows in developing friendships, resilience, and forward momentum.
