Our Mission Statement: We serve to empower widows to “lean into life,” build resilience and release their potential to make a positive difference in the world.
Modern Widows Club is designed to create a safe and private environment for widows to lean into life together through the journey.
We are the club no one wants to be in because you only get in by virtue of experiencing a great loss. Yet what I hope you find once you’re here is that you’re surrounded by a community of really amazing women that you can lean on and learn from. We’re widows helping widows to live– to go upward and onward. Sometimes we cry and sometimes we laugh. We talk about how to tackle challenges without our husbands’ help and cheer each other on. We often share food as we do this, because who doesn’t like to eat?
When a woman loses her husband she tends to feel very alone. Regardless of her age or circumstances, she can use other women in her life who understand the unique challenges she is now faced with. She needs women who will build her up and encourage her in this new life she walks. We are stronger together. No woman is an island. We need each other.
Meet our Leaders
Chapter Leader: Katie C.
On February 24th 2012, I was 32 years old; a mother of 2 little boys (7 and 5), working full time as a legal advocate for a Domestic Violence Agency, and a wife to a police officer named Ken. By the 25th of February, I was a widow; Ken had died by suicide. I remember dry heaving and making noises similar to those I made during child birth. I couldn’t fathom telling my boys that their Daddy, their best friend, their HERO, had died. I remember people saying to me, “Ok, this is the worst of it-the worst is over…you can all start to heal now…” The worst was certainly not over–the worst hadn’t even begun.
But as much as it felt like I was walking around with a head injury, I KNEW I had to really rally for my boys…it was essential to me that they saw that life is worth living, that Daddy WANTED them to live an active, full life..and to eventually feel happiness again. I needed to show them that we could thrive. I also needed them to know that dying by suicide would never be an option for them. Slowly but surely we rebuilt our lives and started laughing again, started looking forward to things again and started counting our blessings (literally, I made them name 3 things they were grateful for every night at dinner!).
I searched for any and all groups/programs for grieving children, other widows, groups for me…I craved connecting with people who had walked (and were walking) our walk. I found Modern Widows Club one night as I sat at my kitchen counter and had done a search on Facebook when I came across the Modern Widows Club Private Convo Group and it was a Godsend!
In 2016 I said yes to love again and married my Chapter 2 and we had a son together. He adopted my older boys in July of 2018. It isn’t always easy-not by a long shot, but it is worth it. As they say in MWC, “We move forward while reaching back.” That has become our family’s motto. I’m still working on myself and areas in which I can grow–In early 2021, I will be a 200hr certified Yoga Teacher as well as Reiki Levels I and II practitioner.
I want this Chapter to be a soft place for you to land. A place where you can feel safe and free to vent, laugh, cry, and hope without judgment. You will be welcomed with open arms! The light in me sees and honors the light in each one of you.
